The School Day

At Allenton Community Primary School, we work in partnership with families to ensure that children are safe, confident and well supported at the start and end of each day.

Start of the School Day

Gates open
The school gates open at 8:45am.

  • Key Stage 2 (Years 3–6)
Children enter via the main gate and walk independently onto the playground and into school.
  • Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 (Reception–Year 2)
Children enter via the FS/KS1 gate (the smaller gate further along the front of the school site) and walk into school.

At the FS/KS1 gate, our ‘Breakfast Buddies’ support children in walking safely around to their classrooms, with additional adults available to help them settle.

Start time
The official start of the school day is 8:50am. Children go straight to their classrooms, where class teachers are ready to welcome them and begin the day’s learning.

Staff support
Members of the Inclusion Team (including Safeguarding, Behaviour and Senior Leaders) are available on the gates each morning to:

  • support children in coming into school
  • speak with parents and carers if needed

End of the School Day

The safety of our pupils remains our priority at the end of the school day. The following arrangements ensure that all children are dismissed safely.

Reception to Year 4
Children must be collected by a parent/carer or a responsible person aged 14 or over.
In some circumstances, the school may agree for a secondary-aged sibling to collect, where this is deemed appropriate.

Year 5 and Year 6
Children may walk home independently; however, this must be supported by written parental permission provided to the school.

Collecting younger siblings
Children in Year 5 and Year 6 are not permitted to collect younger siblings.
The only exception is where a Year 6 child collects a Year 5 sibling, as both are permitted to walk home independently.

Changes to arrangements
Any changes to normal collection arrangements must be communicated to the school office in advance and agreed by the school.

At the end of the day, staff are available on the gates and class teachers dismiss children from exit points, ensuring that all pupils leave safely in line with these arrangements.

Children remain the school’s responsibility until they have been safely collected or dismissed in line with these expectations.

Collection During the School Day (Events and Early Collection)

At times, the school may invite parents and carers into school for events such as showcases, book looks or celebrations of learning which take place before the end of the school day.

These events are designed to provide opportunities for families to engage with children’s learning. They are not intended for early collection unless this follows the procedures below.

  • Children may only be collected during the school day by a responsible adult aged 18 or over
  • All children must be signed out by an adult before leaving the school site
  • We do not permit children to be collected by younger siblings during the school day, even if this is part of usual end-of-day arrangements

Children remain the school’s responsibility during the school day, and these procedures are in place to ensure that all pupils leave safely.
